Mastodon tusks
From the Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress. I couldn't locate any text related to the photos, but they have been filed in the "Alaska" category.
I have a strong feeling that it is in fact a photo from Alaska. A friend of my dad's is a bush pilot who has spent a lot of time in remota parts of Alaska and says he finds mastodon stuff all the time. Tusks, teeth, bones. He says in some places you just go to the steep side of a river bend and kick down some dirt and you are likely to find something after a little while.
this photograph kicks more ass then this one
