  2. My mother would not let me wear jeans, because "that's what workingmen wore!" But my father worked in a factory, wore ironed, white, shirts and pants to work, changed into overalls, changed back. Such a strange mixed message. I was ten in 1972 for reference.

  3. That is one of the most profound things I've ever read. Thank you for sharing that. Seriously. That moved me--and I will seek to share it with my students.

  6. I actually know a lot of laborers-- and fast food workers-- who have college degrees and all the debt associated with that.

  7. And it's not always hard work that is the problem, many many many people do not want to learn a SKILL. If you can't do it somewhat mindlessly then there is no interest.

I pay more than twice minimum wage and it's a struggle to find a competent worker. The work is not that complicated, you just have to be driven and have some self-respect for the work you do.

  8. my friends and i all have BS degrees and have worked manual labor. it's sometimes hard to get a job if you're white because people know you won't work as hard.
