Three-finger salute

As noted by the BBC -
Scout groups in the UK are to have the chance to teach young people about sexual health issues in an attempt to curb sexually transmitted infections.
Kevin at Arbroath noted that the BBC quickly changed the photo embed, but he was able to get a screencap of the original (unfortunate) choice.

  1. I am missing something here. What is wrong with the Scout salute all of a sudden? It has been the same since I was Scout in the '40s and probably long before that.

  2. bigjohn, there's nothing wrong with the salute per se (I used it 50 years ago too), but when the gesture is used in a photo about sex education, it bears an eerie resemblance to the configuation used by a physician during a digital vaginal exam.

  3. Oh, well, I am unfamiliar with vaginal exams, being a boy and all and I missed the esoteric reference. However, I am certainly glad that the same three fingers are not used to check my prostate.

  4. Thanks Minnesotastan for the explanation. I thought it was so European finger insult.

  5. It may be that, too. It's not quite the configuration of The Shocker.
