What do you do with 380 million eggs?

Seriously.  Everyone has probably seen this announcement -
ATLANTA - Hundreds of people have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs in four states and possibly more, health officials said Wednesday as a company dramatically expanded a recall to 380 million eggs...

Initially, 228 million eggs, or the equivalent of 19 million dozen-egg cartons, were recalled by the company Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa. But that number was increased to nearly 32 million dozen-egg cartons.
So 32 million dozen eggs come back.  What happens to them???  I would rather hope they are not discarded into some waste pit, because they are only suspected of being contaminated.  Can they be processed in some way?  Can they cook the eggs to kill potential salmonella, then use the egg proteins in food products?

I'm not expecting a definitive answer - just pondering what I would do with all those eggs...

  3. They can't be safely used in food production, that's why there is a recall.

There are over 85 billion eggs produced in the U.S. each year, the recall is less then 1/2% of the eggs produced, they can dump and or burn them.

@pete, the contamination is on the outsdie of the eggs. You'd have to hand out rubber gloves too or get the egg-chuckers sick.

  4. I read in an article in the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel that the salmonella was also discovered inside the shells.
