"I had done a hellish thing"

Plate 9 from the Dover edition of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.  Posted because I think this blog benefits from an occasional insertion of one of Gustave Dore's wood-engravings [others here and here].

Not relevant to the image, but from the same work, are these famous lines:
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.
Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.
Via.
