If you belive in a god, they do not.
The food restrictions are safety instructions.
The information on caring for your slaves, rarely addressed by theologians or factory owners, are practical not divine. I mean, you do you and treat your slaves how you want, I'll take a humanist approach and not have them in the first place.
The many Biblical examples of paedophilic marriage or the literal incestual progenitors of the human race, we can ignore that, because it didn't happen or because Religious Reasons.
The Bible (which has never been presented in its original form, only via unscrupulous editors) is an instruction manual for running a pre-medieval society. And an effective one, which is why even modern movements try to ultilise the same book to make us afraid of the witchcraft of our neighbours.
The Bible prioritises looking after people and somehow conservatives use it to protect corporations. I was questioning AaronS' supposition that flood myths written down 2000 years BC were "taken from" the Genesis story in the Bible. It's as you say - the Genesis story was based on more ancient stories.Minnesotastanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01382888179579245181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-59701372892953307342022-11-01T14:46:55.594-05:002022-11-01T14:46:55.594-05:00I haven't read either book, but I expect that ...I haven't read either book, but I expect that Irving Finkel's The Ark before Noah is worth a read as well (and more recent by 15 years). After all, if I wrote down a story that my grandmother told me that was told to her by her grandmother, the story would long predate its writing. If someone else's great, great grandmother wrote down what she saw, it does not necessarily mean her version would be more accurate than mine, though the written source would be older.Brad Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00197301845256854051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-23411016551077404382022-10-31T10:45:41.098-05:002022-10-31T10:45:41.098-05:00Agreed. But after centuries, those stories changed enough to be very distinct from one another (yet with hints that indicates there is perhaps some source event). Maybe Genesis is the core truth those stories were taken from.AaronShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01263323475384069306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-72952964685153895122022-10-29T16:50:30.333-05:002022-10-29T16:50:30.333-05:00So ... my washing out and putting my now empty to ...So ... my washing out and putting my now empty to go coffee cup in the recycling bin will offset any future global sea rises by how much ?
----
Thats fascinating stuff ... sudden release of huge amounts of stored water, my school boy learnt pop up land bridges being actual land (pre-rinse cycle) and the bible's believability being, ha, diluted, by fact and happenstance.

And the painted horror of that ... tsunami is the wrong word ? ... wall of water coming in at the shore at supernatural speed, and at maybe twice or more the height of the average man ... not just a wall but a solid mass many kilometres in lateral depth ... and having your entire village or town wiped out, washed away ... loved ones washed up weeks later on new shores as carrion for seagulls and jungle creatures, them now living on waterfront properties.
----
My brother and I, living in different countries, now have more fodder for our discussions on climate change.

Thanks for risking RSI with your typing, now have a rest.

Cheers. I'm thinking of the Christian missionaries who must have felt such confirmation of their faith to hear stories like their own "Eve" story, not realizing their own story came from the Polynesian societies they were trying to convert. What was it like to go to Africa and hear no common legends? This is very complex. Thank you for posting it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
