A., Farnsworth, A, et al. 2020. Asteroid impact, not volcanism, caused the end-Cretaceous dinosaur extinction. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.) based on environmental modelling actually posits that the Deccan traps activity might have partially _mitigated_ the effects of the asteroid impact. You can hear an interview with one of the authors of the paper on ep. 112 of the Palaeocast podcast - https://www.palaeocast.com/extinction-of-the-dinosaurs/ Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4912713243046142041.post-64147842962210122682020-07-27T19:31:08.708-05:002020-07-27T19:31:08.708-05:00The role of the Deccan traps in the K-Pg (Dinosaur...The role of the Deccan traps in the K-Pg (Dinosaurs) extinction is going to be debated for a while yet due to dating problems that far back. In the literature you find high confidence statements like "The results suggest that the onset of these eruptive events began tens-of-thousands of years before the Chicxulub bolide impact." and "determine its age with an uncertainty as low as ±40,000 years".
It leaves a good deal of uncertainty as to which came first - Traps or Asteroid and were either alone responsible for the extinction or did it take both.
And the very controversial possibility that the Asteroid STARTED the Trapsrockyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17656781969522287931noreply@blogger.com
