Breaking news

Screencap this afternoon from the France 24 site.  Putin's ally Orban loses despite Trump's support:
“My Administration stands ready to use the full Economic Might of the United States to strengthen Hungary’s Economy, as we have done for our Great Allies in the past, if Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian People ever need it,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social ahead of Sunday’s vote.

“We are excited to invest in the future Prosperity that will be generated by Orbán’s continued Leadership!” said Trump, who has endorsed Orbán multiple times during the campaign.
The U.S. has always influenced foreign elections - but usually not so overtly.  Or so ineffectually.

And "Magyar" is such a wonderful patronym for a Hungarian leader.  Apparently it is a common surname as well as the ethnonym for the people.

    1. The guy who won is European right wing, but seems committed to fair elections. OTOH, he's from Orban's old party and a lot of work has already been done to give the Hungarian Prime Minister an awful lot of power, and we know what power does.
Meanwhile the judiciary and media are HEAVILY stacked with people supportive of Orban, so all that is going to need torn down.

  5. Oh, arguably getting Carney elected in Canada was more significant, as Carney had been written off until the threats of invasion and tariffs made Pierre Poilievre's Trump-lite approach unelectable. What happened in Hungary was happening regardless of Vance showing up.

  6. Despite? Nah, he lost BECAUSE of Trump's support. Europe knows; Everything Trump Touches Dies.

    1. Trump wasn't an issue. Orban lost because the country is falling apart because of corruption and cronyism. You're definitely overestimating how much Hungary knows about Trump and in particular, given Orban's near total control of the mass media there, how little bad they heard about Trump.
I would concede younger voters, who get most of their news off the Internet, voted against Fidesz in higher numbers but it was losing older voters that turned it into a tidal wave.
