I remember a BBC documentary in promotion of the Spielberg Lincoln film, saying "No one can really truly know the man on Mt Rushmore". I think it should be rewritten as no one can really know the man behind Donald Trump.
Elon Musk has a fascinating theory about all of this (on a recent Joe Rogan podcast)....
Musk claims that the supposed money for "healthcare" is really about taking care of illegal immigrants. Why? Because if you get enough people in a particular state--illegals or not--when the census comes to town, they count EVERYONE. The Constitution does not make it clear that the census is only to count citizens (which would be the most logical and reasonable interpretation, but I digress).
Thus, if you have a high census count (perhaps by allowing unknown illegals to vote--which might explain why Democrats are so against the commonsense notion of simply showing one's legal identification in order to vote), you have more seats in Congress.
Musk claimed that this was because Democrats are trying to build a supermajority in Congress that will permit them to do virtually anything--including override any president's veto.
I'm not saying that's true, but it does have some sense to it. I mean, who in the world thinks it a BAD IDEA to require that a voter at least prove he or she is approved to vote? Why is that such an apparently "dangerous" concept?
under 1 minute of employing a search engine. you’re welcome. and in case that is too much text for you:
obtaining can be prohibitively expensive (in money and/or time), therefore innately discriminatory. and against the 24th amendment, although you don’t seem to care about that entire document anymore.
shown to actively discriminate by age (fewer young voters), disability (fewer disabled voters), gender identity (fewer transgender voters), wealth (fewer low-income or poor voters), political party (the overall reduced turnout pushes the result republican), and potentially on race (studies vary a lot, but if there is an effect, you guessed it, fewer voters of colour).
and it has no effect on voter fraud, which isn’t happening in any significance anyways, while reducing turnout overall, i.e. it is counterproductive.
in short: i see why some people would be very in favour of all these effects. but it is also clearly evident that they are active hindrances to a fair vote. so yeah.
Raphael, I am not AT ALL convinced that this is some plot to keep people from voting. Rather, it is precisely because some people--even if only a few--do apparently vote without being documented.
If someone has the dadburn time to vote, the have the dadburn time to get a proper ID.
If some young person doesn't care enough to obtain an ID, then they probably don't care enough to vote.
Gender identity? Really? That's hogwash. We're talking BIRTH sex. If they want to identify another way, go ahead.
Why would poor people somehow make the effort to vote, but not to obtain an ID? Something is not right here.
Is it laziness? Apathy? Whatever it is, if they care enough to vote, they'll care enough to obtain a required ID.
i linked you a sourced article. if you decide to respond with intuitive hunches, we’re not having a discussion.
but the uninformed rant about ‘birth sex’ falls straight in line with thinking that musk has something ‘fascinating’ to say on rogan’s podcast. you’re not here for facts.
States will find ways to manipulate voter ID requirements. For example, in Texas, as concealed carry permit is an accepted form of ID. But a college student ID is not. What does that tell you?
These comments are not meant to render an opinion regarding ID and voting.
A concealed carry permit is similar to a DL. It has your address, birthdate, picture, etc. and is very hard to forge. In the state I live in and the state to the north, a CC permit is accepted as valid ID to buy beer, enter a hospital, etc. It must be renewed regularly, usually 4 to 8 years depending on the state. There are fairly serious penalties for possessing a counterfeit CC permit. You do not need to be a US citizen (in any state, as far as I know) to own or carry a weapon, but the qualifications are much stricter if you are not.
Most student college IDs have very limited information on them. Your name, a picture, a student ID number, perhaps a birthdate. Very few if any have addresses. They do not have expiration dates. College IDs are not considered valid legal ID in most states. In my state you cannot use them to purchase alcohol. They are generally easily counterfeited.
As an aside, Texas no longer requires a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Permits are available and people who wish to carry their weapon in another state are encouraged to obtain a permit so they would be allowed to carry in other states.
Any opinion rendered in this post is completely unintentional and should be disregarded.
raphael sounds pretty impatient with Aaron; that is for seemingly either not reading or being convinced by his Wikipedia link. But here's a quote from the article: A 2023 report published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) found that "voter ID requirements motivate and mobilize supporters of both parties, ultimately mitigating their anticipated effects on election results".
Funny enough, I have seen many people say they appreciate Trump for defending Michael Jackson during his trials.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, James Garfield's story comes to Netflix in 48 hours.
Thanks for the reminder. I'll repost my item about the program.

ReplyDeleteIt's perhaps an amusing gotcha, but I'm not sure what the point is ... the left doesn't need telling and the right won't care?
