Too many people just can't recognize satire

Embedded above is a screencap from a post on X that I saw reposted on Facebook, where there were thousands of comments, the vast majority of which seriously argued that this is not a walkable community.  Others asked why you would walk miles to a gas station, and some suggested walking seven miles to a liquor store would be a good idea.  These must be the same people who become congressmen believing stories from The Onion.

Lots more similar posts from @bankertobuilder.

  1. Good stuff. The average size new home in the US is about three times what was being built in the 1950s. While, oh dear, about a million of us are homeless--and many millions can't afford the rent. Sitting Bull again: "The white man knows how to make everything, but he doesn't know how to distribute it."

    1. Meanwhile the current average UK home is 20% smaller than those being built in the 70s. US vs UK population 5-6 times bigger but US vs UK landmass is 40 times bigger. You guys can afford to spread out a little. Meanwhile everyone suffers from NIMBYism.

  2. When I was about 12 a teacher gave us Swift's "A Modest Proposal" to read in class. I actually laughed in places, but everyone else in the class took it seriously and was horrified by both the proposal and by my laughter.

  4. Even without the satirical caption, this is a sad, sad picture.

  5. I believe in walkable communities, but if this is walkable (and presuming everyone's able-bodied), then @bankertobuilder has never been to Europe.

    1. DB, the @bankertobuilder posts are satires or parodies, such as this -

      People crave mixed-use zoning.

That's why our beautiful new 45-home community in Canton, Ohio will feature a commercial prison at the heart of the development.

Residents will be able to walk to their dream job as a prison guard, or visit friends both new and old within the confines of the jail. Perfect for families!

Pre-selling now, starting in the low $740k's.

  6. I'm just staring at the picture and the total lack of trees. Or any type of natural growth.

  7. The problem is that unless one is terminally online nowadays, Poe's law strongly takes effect. In our algorithmically-fed reality, no one has time to go back and read the post history of every poster out there. And the algorithm sure does love to feed outrage...
