Clever crossword construction

I enjoy doing two crosswords every day (NYT and Los Angeles Times).  Sometimes at the end I stop to admire the skill of the constructor.  I hope this one is old enough now so that this post won't be a spoiler.

  1. I do those too, but also rather enjoy some of the crossword puzzles that pull from a very different set of trivia: New York Magazine, Slate, and Vox all have good ones (NYMag being my favorite). For example, an NYMag clue asks about a video game, it has a chance to be from the last 25 (or even 5) years, which is not true of the NYTimes puzzles.

They're all little, 10x10. Vox does a cute thing of having two long answers that are almost the same, e.g. SEED OIL vs. SEE DOUBLE.

  3. I'm fairly new to crosswords, but I've been enjoying the daily midis at www.puzzmo.com. They have some different features, like indicators if the answer is multiple words, and they provide some backstory after each one.
