Ike

Taking a moment to remember an old-fashioned Republican (and the Supreme Allied Commander of Forces in Europe).  Photo from the New York Times, via the nocontextpics subreddit.

  1. Did you know Eisenhower was unbaptized when he became president? Soon after becoming president he was baptized by J. Edgar Hoover’s personal minister. Source: G-Man by Beverly Gage.

  2. I wonder how he would feel about his party's current hopeful.

    1. Same way he felt about Hitler.

    2. I wonder how he'd feel about the Harris & Winfrey star f-er special. I doubt Ike had a weak stomach, but I imagine he'd be reaching for a bucket.

  3. He was a better painter than Dubya.

  4. Interesting that he's making a color painting from a black and white photo, very talented, especially for a self-taught artist. I would love to see the final version of this one, but google isn't cooperating.

  5. "The Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it...If a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everything—even to a possible and dramatic change in the Constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon ‘moderation’ in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate the labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things...Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
--Eisenhower, from a letter to his brother.

  6. There was a time when the US had pretty good people in both parties, as well as pretty bad ones. It's a shame, though an inevitable one, that the Conservative/Republican side would swear their allegiance to a would-be dictator. The simple fact is that conservatives are by definition invested in preserving the status quo. They oppose progress. And they are never on the right side of history. Not once.
