What is this food ?

The image is a screencap taking while watching the television broadcast of the NCAA women's basketball semifinal game between Iowa and Connecticut.  I don't believe the plate of food was described, mentioned, alluded to, or otherwise noted (but the TV was on mute); the image was part of an "ambience" series of photos during a break in the action, presumably taken at the stadium or in the surrounding community of Cleveland, Ohio, where the tournament was held.

It looks like a sandwich on steroids.  Ground beef?  Pastrami?  Google Lens seems to steer toward a Reuben or a "deli sandwich" but I'm too busy to drill down for details and will rely on the viewers here.  Apologies to Clevelanders if I'm unaware of your local trademark delicacy.

And do you just bite into it, or do you have to squish it down?  Thanx in advance.

  4. That's a Pastrami on Rye from Slyman's Deli in Cleveland. You can eat it anyway you want, but mostly it's a squish and bite scenario.

  5. Can see sign in the background: “Slyman’s”. Quick search for “Slyman’s, Cleveland” reveals their signature dish is “the biggest and best corned beef sandwich”.

  10. I grew up in Cleveland and went to Bay Cities deli in Santa Monica after moving to Los Angeles. I felt nostalgic and ordered a hot corn beef on rye and they handed me a 'normal' sandwich. The deli person saw my face and asked where I'm from. Then fixed one up like this and handed it over. Everyone in line then began asking for the same and they said that you only get it like that if you have an ID that says you're from Cleveland.

  12. It looks like the food has been identified correctly, but it reminds me of how the Carnegie Deli in NYC (now closed) served its pastrami sandwich:
