What's wrong with people these days??? Updated.

I have fond memories of walking along Hadrian's Wall when I was a younger man.  This wasn't a whimsical folly; it was planned vandalism requiring heavy power tools or a two-man crosscut saw.  Whoever did this should be castrated.  Publicly, IMHO.

The embedded photo is a screencap from a brief video homage at the BBC.

Reposted from last year to information about vandalism of rock formations at Lake Mead:

The embedded image is a composite I made of screencaps from a video of the incident.  In the video a park ranger explains that it is impossible for staff top monitor the entire recreation area, and asks the public's help in this regard.

  1. When they figure out who the perp is, I'd love to hear his why.
Of course it might just be, "seemed like a good idea at the time".
Whoever drew the Scotland/England border on the aerial photo was drinking.

    1. Or maybe "Sycamores are an invasive species so I'm doing nature a favour."

  2. Saw this on another post - that basically said the saddest part is that this was the final tree in an original forest.

A re-wilding of the area and replanting of Sycamores

    1. Sycamore spreads like a weed so someone has been keeping that place sapling-free for decades.
None of my neighbours has a large sycamore, but there is a park about half a mile away covered with them. I started collected the sycamore seeds that sprouted in my lawn this summer and potted up about three dozen of them before getting bored. No idea what I'm going to do with them. Had planned to make longbows but apparently they're not great for it.

I've been pondering if to reply or not for roughly a week by now.. the only reason I am choosing to do so is because I like and respect you.

Any form of amputation as punishment must be rejected, no matter what for. Making it public would only serve desires for revenge.

    2. That seems more like an easy out than the real intention at the time, in particular given your normal writing tone.

Either way, you are free to take my initial and this reply as signal on how your post was read in absence of any markers of sarcasm, or to disregard it.

    3. Ok, no amputation. But what do you think is an appropriate punishment for such an action? Criticism is easy. Try to bring the debate further.

  4. * More gets pictured and videoed. So more gets noticed. Would the NPS have noticed these rocks moving without video evidence?

    * The population of the US has grown over my lifetime from 200M to 330M people. There are more assholes.

    * The last few decades have glorified assholes. In TV-series like Jackass, but also by the public calls of violence by political leaders. Individuals are to be praised for the unconventional actions as opposed to chided for their damage to society.

    * Boys will be boys and destroy things.

    * Is it really getting worse? Buffalo Bill shot thousands of buffaloes for giggles.

  5. Fossil Cycad National Monument is an older example. Created in 1922 and deauthorized in 1957 because all the cycad-like fossils in the Monument had been removed leaving nothing notable. https://www.nps.gov/articles/fossil-cycad-national-monument.htm
