I have fond memories of walking along Hadrian's Wall when I was a younger man. This wasn't a whimsical folly; it was planned vandalism requiring heavy power tools or a two-man crosscut saw. Whoever did this should be castrated. Publicly, IMHO.

The embedded image is a composite I made of screencaps from a video of the incident. In the video a park ranger explains that it is impossible for staff top monitor the entire recreation area, and asks the public's help in this regard.
When they figure out who the perp is, I'd love to hear his why.

Sycamore spreads like a weed so someone has been keeping that place sapling-free for decades.
DeleteNone of my neighbours has a large sycamore, but there is a park about half a mile away covered with them. I started collected the sycamore seeds that sprouted in my lawn this summer and potted up about three dozen of them before getting bored. No idea what I'm going to do with them. Had planned to make longbows but apparently they're not great for it.

Fossil Cycad National Monument is an older example. Created in 1922 and deauthorized in 1957 because all the cycad-like fossils in the Monument had been removed leaving nothing notable. https://www.nps.gov/articles/fossil-cycad-national-monument.htm
