  1. Notice how they walked all over the street? Jaywalking was invented for cars' convenience.

  2. People still wear hats - maybe not as many people do? Dress styles have changed as well, so it is easy to pick up a hat at a big box store rather than going to a hat store.

  3. I've read somewhere that the change in car designs, making certain styles of hat inconvenient while in a car helped contribute to their decline. (as opposed to the claim it was JFK's fault for not wearing one during his inauguration) I've also heard that a shortage of silk or other materials in the post WWII years caused an increase in prices for hats and also contributed to the decline.

  4. William Steig, author of the children's book that eventually became Shrek, also wrote and illustrated a simple memoir of his childhood called When Everybody Wore A Hat.
In his final picture, funny enough, he's very clearly not wearing a hat.

  7. If you take a close look at that video you'll notice all the men are also wearing a suit.
I first realized the prevalence of suits while watching the box set of The Three Stooges films. Through pretty much all of the stooge films they're either wearing a uniform or a suit frequently three piece. Even when they're ragged it's a ragged suit.

  8. By the time JFK came along, men had grown tired of wearing hats and were looking for an excuse to not wear them. Thanks, JFK.
