I'm pretty sure The Joy of Sex was on the shelf in my high school library, along with Our Bodies, Ourselves. I'm curious as to why IronHorse believes that books that discuss sex factually should not be on school library shelves. Certainly a good many teens are sexually active, and accurate information can help them make informed choices.
As some are pointing out, in the public library it might be perfectly reasonable to allow for just about any book...but NOT in a public SCHOOL library. Kids will gravitate to these things as if pulled in by a tractor beam. Yes, the forbidden attracts kids, but we don't have to make it easy for them to get their hands on such things.
Innocence is a valuable thing. Semi-innocence is also. I'm not sure of what gift we could give children that is greater than seeking to protect their innocence (including protecting them from school violence).
Kids can't be innocent once they know that going to school carries with it rules on how to hide from gunmen. Prioritize keeping kids alive then we can worry about them learning about sex. This library purge is just a way to distract helicopter parents from the shootings, parents that desperately need to ignore the shootings to fit into their ideologies about guns.
