Butterfly season has begun in Wisconsin

First sighting was yesterday, in Milwaukee County:

Not surprisingly, it was a Mourning Cloak, because they come out of hibernation and don't need to migrate here from down south.

Addendum:  The first butterfly in our yard appeared on March 20 this year, and was -  not surprisingly - a Mourning Cloak.

  1. today is 'bee day' here in south coastal new england - sunny day, warm, in the 50s, no wind, crocus flowers in bloom, bees gorging on nectar snd pollen, the sniff incredibly sweet, the sound - buzzzzzzz.

p.s. 'bee day' is a personal holiday, celebrated on the first day that bees appear in the crocuses. invariable, a few days later, it gets cold again, the crocus flowers close up, and the bees go away, somewhere.

  2. yesterday was 'peeper day', the first evening when spring peepers can be heard.

    p.s. another personal holiday.

p.s. this is the first year that i have noted the coincidence of 'bee day' and 'peeper day'. that should not be unusual - a day or two of warm and sunny weather is enough to flower the crocuses, which brings out the bees, and the day's warmth is enough keep the evening warm and bring out the spring peepers.

  3. yesterday was 'osprey day' - the spotting of the first ospreys. this pair was on their nest, which is built on the T-bar of an electrical line, and about 40 feet from shoreline. another pair was spotted on the radio tower of the fire station; that one about 200 yards to the shoreline.

p.s. yet another personal holiday. the actual day may have been a day or so earlier, but yesterday was when i spotted them.
