  1. IIRC this was caused by a lowered water table, due to agricultural usage.

    1. From the Reddit link:
President of Konya Chamber of Geological Engineers Dr. Fetullah Arık said that in the Karapınar region, 300 potholes occurred until 2017, 9 last year and 11 this year. Arik, "maize in the region, such as clover grown very water-efficient products. Considering that the region received rainfall below average in Turkey, lowering of groundwater levels also accelerate the formation of sinkholes," he said.

  3. I met a guy from Kansas who said he'd never go to Calif. because of earthquakes, the ground can open and swallow you up and nobody would ever know. This photo makes Ks feel more like home.

  6. Believe it or not, many years ago, out hunting one night in Florida, we were driving through an orange grove and apparently hit a weak spot and we were in a sinkhole. I was in the back of trucks with the dogs, and I slide to the front of the bed. I remember seeing the windshield with nothing but dirt showing. Adults wiggled out windows. Truck at near 45 degree angle. Woke up nearby farmer to use tractor to pull us out. By that time we had no hankering to hunt, so we went home with an adventure instead of a coin.
