Australian fires

A chilling image and video.

I didn't have the heart to blog images of the burned wildlife.

  1. I am an Australian living in NSW where we have over a hundred fires burning and today is going to be a bad day. I am lucky I live in suburbia but I have family and friends who are bracing for the worst and hoping for the best. My birthday is next week and I have asked that people donate to the Red Cross instead of buying me anything. What we need to remember is that the people affected will need ongoing support not just during the event but months afterwards. There have been over 1300 homes lost, and the loss of human life 17, live stock and native animals does not bare thinking about to put thing in perspective our population is only 24.6 million and in NSW is 7.5 with a land mass of 809,444 km² (502963 miles) I would like to thank the US, Canadian, and NZ firefighters who have come to help us in our time of need. There is a feeling of helplessness but not hopelessness in our communities, all we can do is watch and wait and then rally when it is over by buying local, holidaying local to help those communities recover and rebuild.

  2. It is heart-breaking. I am quite a way from these fires, but everything here smells of smoke and I woke up coughing several times in the night.
