Women may have been relegated to "non-combat" roles during war but, that does not mean they were not there participating, though people seem to like to forget they did. (Ironic given that we're discussing casual sexism.) And, being in a "non-combat" role doesn't protect you from the enemy shooting at you!
Casual sexism of marketing people in the 50s. Look at advertising today and see how much of it reflects 'real life'... vs. some ad exec's ideal of what people oughtta be doing.
An early Playboy magazine ad for liquor showed men and women at a casual party. After studying it I realized only men were holding glasses of whiskey; the women were standing around admiring the men, I guess.
Men fought all the wars in that time--and still do, mostly. Just a fact.
