Blue lava

One of the hydrothermal sites at Dollol (Ethiopia).  The burning of sulfur generates a characteristic blue flame.  Credit Olivier Grunewald.

  1. This is beautiful but terrifying. Or terrifying but beautiful.
Among other things I did with my chemistry set when I was a kid was burning sulfur. The blue flame was lovely but the side effects were not pleasant in close quarters.
