This is actually a problem for many genres, and may be the reason we see so many period novels these days (set in the 1920's, 30's, earlier, etc.). In the SF world, Steampunk is manageable, true future SF gets harder and harder.
As to the laser: Wonder how it would do on graffiti? Or, for that matter, a pile of dog poop on the lawn?

I'd be kinda concerned about the residue going into the air.
