A Colonial-era teething whistle

The senior curator at Jamestown (Virginia) lucidly explains the significance of a "teething whistle" recovered at that site.  I presume the whistle feature was incorporated into the device for parental entertainment of the toddler, rather than from any expectation that the toddler would use it to summon/annoy his parents.
