  1. As a child, I thought it meant that the water had colour added. Little did I know...

  2. Had never seen this kind of thing until we visited my grandfather in Florida in 1960. My mother took a photo of my dad drinking from a water fountain labeled "colored." We are all white. They thought it was "backward" and funny. A few years later I was marching for Civil Rights for blacks.
