"Doubly-landlocked"

There are two nations in the world that are "doubly-landlocked," meaning that they have no seacoast and all the countries that surround them have no seacoast.

One of these two countries is Uzbekistan, for whom the United States has purchased an armored patrol boat for it to use to patrol its rivers.

The other doubly-landlocked country is identified at the Neatorama source (hint: it's not in Asia).  Can you identify it wihout looking?

  3. Lichtenstein is definitely double landlocked since it it sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria, which are both landlocked countries.

On the other hand, two of Uzbekistan's neighbors, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan have a seacoast to the Caspian Sea. It is true, however that the Caspian Sea is landlocked itself so perhaps that was part of the rationale.

    1. Landlocking defined (per Wikipedia):

A landlocked country is a country entirely enclosed by land, or whose only coastlines lie on closed seas. There are 48 landlocked countries in the world, including partially recognized states. ..The general economic and other disadvantages experienced by landlocked countries makes the majority of these countries Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs). Nine of the twelve countries with the lowest HDI scores are landlocked.

  4. I will forever think of Uzbekistan as Uzbecky-becky-beckystan, thanks to a certain Republican candidate for President.
