A restaurant whistleblower - inspired by Snowden?

Excerpts from his "about" statement:
"...there serving maggot slap and fly trails with all you can eat advertisements!..... its been over a week now since this has been brought to corporate attention, I contacted the volusia county health dept..... they dont handle it.... they gave me a number and a persons name..... said to ask for them in person...... the operator didnt know who i was talkin about and didnt seem to care.......i placed an ebay "check out item # 121135647488" that made the owner call the police and tell on himself.....i was contacted by the port orange police dept for black mail....wtf...i made several detailed complaints with corporate golden corral.......i have met with the owner personally, he ownes 30 golden corrals in georgia and florida, he showed me pictures of his new golden corral vehicle wraps and explained he "thought this was a cash call" he explained his deep connections in law enforcement and explained "we could be opening ourselfs to a lawsuit" in a way i felt it to be threatning..... i have several texts with wesh 2 news..... i contacted abc cbs nbc and any other c's i could get post's to .... i went to news journal let them view it the video and pictures..... they didnt give a damn!.......i sent Dr Phil a message???????? it was his challenge!..... as of three days ago i left a message with the detective who contacted me about my ebay post....
Why is this restauraunt still open serving maggot smack and fly trialings to the people of Port Orange??
as you see the systemis failing us!!"
The Reddit thread has some salient observations.  One additional thought: since the restaurant responded this way to a scheduled inspection, does that mean that restaurants always know when inspections will be conducted?   So they only need to be compliant once/month or whatever?  Sounds like part of the blame lies with the inspecting authorities, not just the food establishments.

Addendum:  One of a set of four related photos -

- discussed in a different Reddit thread by various former restaurant workers.

  1. Disgusting! Anyone with any conscience should report these places just as this young man has done.

I assume he was fired and will probably not be able to get another job anywhere.

This whole world is going to h***!

  2. I worked at a Golden Corral in Utah, thankfully it didn't look like any of these pictures/video. But I still don't like to eat there to this day.. and now I will avoid it at all costs.

  3. It's a classic (The Wire) case of people being forced to game the system or "juke the stats". Inspections and over-ambitious demands force employees and management to cheat and hide to maintain a clean sheet.

By definition all franchisees are locked into a narrow system, where everything is accounted for in a register somewhere. People almost instinctively, as an expression of personal freedom, try to test what they can get away with. Forcing people to not do anything wrong, takes away their willingness to do things right.

It's also the reason why stepping up punishment for any kind of (hygienic) transgressions doesn't work, it will just increase the chances of people cheating to avoid even the smallest chance of being busted.

Not only do you need properly trained employees and franchisees acting in good conscience, but there needs to be a trust in the inspectors to advise and help, rather than make demands, criticise, harass and punish.

    1. It's more like the inspectors weren't punishing this place enough. It should have been shut down long ago. Bad owners, bad management, lax inspection and punishment, THAT'S the problem, the fact that it's a chain that likely pays miserable wages also probably has something to do with it as well. Working in a few decent restaurants over the years I can imagine no owner, manager, chefs, kitchen staff etc. tolerating scenes like this. This didn't happen because inspectors hurt their feelings...

  5. Most of the carnage in the photos are evidence only of minimally manned cleaning stations. This might be at the end of a rush (made worse when washers are pulled from their line to bus tables), but is more likely evidence of understaffing-- fewer full-timers means the work will stack up but still be done by lockup, and crew morale and reliability is much higher than with having over twice as many part-timers. It doesn't substantially affect food prep. However, the final pic at Imgur is disgraceful; one can only hope the stuff on the floor is there because it's being culled and just hasn't been removed yet.
