Children playing on the beach

Omaha Beach, Normandy, 1947.

I find the juxtaposition to be chilling.

  1. I can understand why you find it chilling. My reaction was more pleasant, a kind of all things must pass thought.

    Cheers.

  3. My reaction is that it's a picture that truly is worth many thousands of words. I see it as life goes on and thank goodness for the innocence and joy of children.

  4. Are you familiar with the song Scared by The Tragically Hip? Here's the salient lyric: "Defanged destroyer limps into the bay/Down at the beach it's attracting quite a crowd/As kids wade through the blood out to it to play." Here's the youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyd-MO0CPcI

  5. So... what exactly is that thing? Part of an amphibious vehicle?

It looks like it was either a barge, or one of the floating piers used to bring supplies ashore. In any case, it was not self-propelled.

  6. This picture reminds me they are still discovering and destroying ordinance from WWI. War maims, kills, and destroys but (so far) life and mankind goes on.
