The rarest play in football: a one-point safety

I've watched football games for 60 years, and have never seen this (or even knew it existed).  The video is from last night's Fiesta Bowl game.

Via Huffington Post, where there is an explanation and an embedded video of a previous similar play in 2004.

  1. College rules, with NFL rules the play is over immediately when the kick is blocked. From the rules: "The ball is dead as soon as
it becomes evident that the kick has failed.". Or with a touchdown attempt "If the defense gains possession, the ball is dead immediately."

  2. Every time I think I understand the rules of football I am proven wrong. Thanks for the interesting post.
