I always saw zombies are an unintentional metaphor for dehumanization... a symbol for the desire to rebel against the presence of a subject deemed poisonous: jews, blacks, arabs, believers, the poor, whatever. Normalizing this kind of dramatization is a signal of fascism.
If they are already dead, why/how can you "kill" them again? What starts out to be shocking/repulsive quickly becomes so repetitive that it is boring. As an adult I am not thrilled or excited by the gore, but I am not sure whether or how a child might be affected.

That is a major moral conflict that is actually addressed in the show, sometimes to heartbreaking effect. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that when most of the population are infected that many of those "zombies" turn out to be friends, family, and acquaintances of the struggling survivors. That is something that the survivors have to come to terms with. I won't even kid everybody and say that the show isn't violent, it's incredibly violent, but that violence is waaay more spread out throughout the series than the edited video makes it seem. I was skeptical about diving into this show, but I've grown to like it, cliches and all. It is based on a critically acclaimed graphic novel so I thought it was worth giving a shot.
Seen a highlight reel out of context the gore is meaningless. It also isn't violence its staged action. Seeing even one zombie being dispatched in real life would freak me out to no end.
Whereas zombies may be a metaphor for the oppressed, man's inhumanity to man, etc. or an excuse to film more violence, I don't know. I do know I'm sick of the whole deal. No more zombies or vampires, please!
I must be pretty desensitized. I noticed that while the various guns have slightly different sound effects (as in real life, a shotgun doesn't sound like a rifle, and a .22 doesn't sound like a 9 mm), the Foley sound crew seems to be using the exact same "squish" noise for nearly every pointy-object-to-zombie-head death.
From my point of view, the zombies are everyone who allow the distractions (sports, religion, mainstream news, etc.) to get in the way of finding out what is really going on. I normally avoid shows with gore and violence, as they are part of the general demise of our morals. This show however makes some valid points, like how vital it is to be a good judge of character. We should learn how to recognize sociopaths and psychopaths.
Well this show isn't for kids. There were violent movies when you were kids too. Some movies are wayyy worse than this. Like robo cop (almost got a X rating but the extremely violent scenes were cut. There is a uncut version.) Rambo was very violent too. The biggest difference? People in the walking dead are killing infected mindless people. In Rambo and robocop there killing living humans. Just my thoughts.
I never liked this show...now I know why. Had to shut this off after about 30 sec...This is what our kids are seeing as they are growing up. We watched cartoon Spiderman and Batman.
I felt nothing. Then again, I watched gifs of people burning puppies and a woman getting its skull crushed with a hammer and I still felt nothing...to me blood is just a red substance that reminds me of the kool-aid man.

ReplyDeleteI'm very desensitized to this sort of gore due to 20 years of movies and video games. At the sight of real blood though I've been known to faint.

ReplyDeleteagree we need to be wary and there are many sociopaths ect. This is not the way to learn how to be a good judge of character...or anything else!
