The Hindenburg Disaster (Pathe News footage)

  1. Thanks for posting this. I had not seen this extended version, just the few minutes of the news footage. Something that caught my attention was the unlikely synonym of "inflammable" = "flammable" at about 0:39. If I am remembering correctly didn't you address that in some posting in the past? Not necessarily about the Hindenburg though.

    1. Just checked - I've done flammable brassieres and flammable water, but nothing about the irrelevance of the "in-" prefix.

    2. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, inflammable does not mean "not flammable"; it means "capable of catching fire", from Latin inflammare.

  2. What gets to me in this clip is the violins, weeping at the tragedy. Along with the urgent narration, the disaster is made all the more profound. Isn't helium now the chief gas used in zepps? --A.
