Popcorn on the cob

We bought several ears at a local farm.  I don't think it tastes any better than commercial mass-market popcorn-in-a-bag, but it's more fun to microwave, and I think would be more interesting for small children.

  1. Do you put the whole ear in a bag or something when you microwave it, or just scoop the popped kernels out of the microwave when it's done? Seems like it'd make a heckuva mess!

    1. At the farm they said to put the cob(s) in a paper bag. It worked well the first time. The second time the bag got too big for the microwave and didn't turn, so some of the corn burned. I think if/when I do it again I'll just put the cob in the microwave and scoop out the popped kernels. A little messy, but without butter etc not hard to cope with.

    2. I hear you about the nasty "butter-flavoured topping" they load the microwave stuff with. We switched back to our old hot-air corn popper a while ago, and add our own flavourings. Sea salt & brewers' yeast is the current fave!

  2. Thanks for the explanation. Now I have this vision in my mind of the humming microwave slowly filling w. popcorn....
