Test your age using guitar riffs

One hundred guitar riffs arranged in chronological order.  An impressive musical accomplishment, but also a test of your "musical knowledge age."  I was able to identify most of the songs and artists until the compilation reached about to #60.  Those of you who are younger will go much further (but may miss some of the early ones).

  1. Well, I recognized about half the riffs between #1 and #15, mostly from having heard them in movies, and then maybe half of #90 - #100. Probably not a good way to judge my age. :-)

    Excellent guitarist.

  3. Any musician type that deals with guitar will know most of these. So it's more of a age test for non guitar/bass players maybe.

And the guy completely slaughtered the timing on some of the songs. But it's hard for a *h**e guy to change up syncopations and all that on the fly. Lastly, some of the riffs were, um, variations on the original and were hard to decipher besides the basic tune.

But overall, he did pretty good. This was a difficult task. On a few of the songs I wished he would just keep playing them! :)

  4. They aren't exactly in chronological order: The Who's "Can't Explain" did not come out before The Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction".

  5. I was OK until the low 60's... but only one Clapton tune??? Seriously?!?!
    Tsk, tsk...

  6. How fun!! Pretty impressive to be able to string together all those riffs.

I knew most of the songs up until about #80 - then it was hit or miss for me. I surprised myself - I'm in my mid-20's, but listen to the oldies. I didn't expect to recognize many after the 80's or 90's.

  7. What the heck was that 1980s cover of "Pictures of Matchstick Men"?? I only know the 1967 original by Status Quo!

That gripe aside, I got 88/100, and my husband got 93/100. Most of the ones I missed were in the '80s and later, which was not surprising. I was born in 1984, but my taste in music would make you think otherwise! My husband is five years older than me...but he also was being more lax about "knowing" the songs or not. For instance, he recognized "Funk #49" by the James Gang, but I knew the name and artist. Still a point for each of us, haha!

This was fun! I think I'll share this.

  8. This was surely interesting. Makes me feel kinda old, but I found myself wishing I could hear the entirety of some of the songs. It was fun.
