Can you spot the photoshopping in this image?

The subject is the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.  Explanation below the fold...

When the original photo was taken, he was wearing a watch on his left wrist.  Not an ordinary, everyday one, but a $30,000 Breguet timepiece:

The original photo, dated 3 July 2009, showed a meeting between the Patriarch and Russian Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov. The doctored version appeared this month.

Despite the airbrushing the watch's presence was given away by its reflection on a polished table top. After heated debate about it in the Russian blogosphere the Patriarchate first removed the enlarged image from the site and then removed the image altogether.

Now the Patriarchate says the original image is back in its archive.

  3. Slight quibble - he's _the_ Russian Orthodox Patriarch, though he is one of several national patriarchs that recognize the spiritual primacy of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Istanbul. (Other national patriarchs include the Serbian Orthodox Patriarch, the Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarch, etc...)
