"Wicked Witch of the East" cupcake

Delightfully clever.  I was not able to navigate the baker's Sweet Rewards website to find out how to make the legs and feet; perhaps it's a proprietary secret.  Any suggestions from readers?

  1. The legs and feet are likely made out of fondant.

  2. I couldn't think of marzipan. That's also a strong possibility.

  3. +1 for fondant. Marzipan would be expensive and has it's own flavor that may not go with the cupcake.

    1. well, marzipan isn't expensive in germany, for example, but here it's used more often, i think. also, to say that the flavor might not go with the cupcake could also be true for fondant (personally, i really dislike fondant, but love marzipan).

  4. Today I learn about fondant and marzipan. Perhaps bloggable some time in the future. Thank you all.

  5. I think these legs were made from a roll of white fondant and the black stripes were painted on. If you intended to make a lot of them, tho, you might stack black and white fondant then cut down thru the stack with a large, wet drinking straw or some other tube shaped thing. You're on your own with the ruby slippers ☺

  6. Candy clay is a possibility.

  7. I'd go with fondant too. Funny post.

  8. Minnesotastan, you've missed out: cakewrecksdotcom, for all your bad cakes. If you select the sunday sweets tag, you get all the good cakes. There are some real artists out there.

  9. We moved a storage shed in the school nursery playground and left a pair of small red wellies sticking out from underneath.
The staff got the joke, but even among the older children few got the reference.

  10. I guess the rest of the world has decided it's more important what the cake looks like than what it tastes like. Fondant is chalky and tastes like sweetened glue.

    1. Totally depends on the brand/type of fondant. The common North American cake decorating supply is nearly monopolised by a particular company well-known to make horrible fondant.

It's a shame, because it isn't difficult to make at home.

  11. Fondant is probably possible however I've found that a modified cream cheese candy is really good for molded decoration, very yummy and a lot cheaper than fondant and so on. Just make your normal cream cheese candy with cream cheese and powdered sugar then start kneading in a LOT more pwd sugar until you have a nice clay-like product that you can mold and model with. You can add flavor to the cream cheese candy (our favorite is mint) and color whatever you want.

  12. I agree - probably either fondant or some type of formed candy (dipped chocolate mint sticks was my first thought). Bakerella is one of my favorite blogs for inspiration on creating edible, 3D treats - her creativity began with cake pops and has branched out from there; great for "outside the box" thinking on all sorts of decorations.
