A Valentine's cartoon from a century ago

Entitled "The Narrowing Target" and captioned as follows: "I'm doing the best I can, old man, but if I make one hit in twenty these days I'm lucky."

I wonder if the cartoon was commenting on the popular body habitus of the era, or the growing independence of women.

From the valentine issue of Puck magazine, February 1914. Illustrated by Nelson Greene.  Found at Vintagraph, which sells prints.
