Anisocoria

A striking example, most likely the result of unilateral dilation for a retinal exam, rather than from disease or injury.  Photo credit to Kelsey Landsgaard, via Reddit.  (p.s. David Bowie here).

  1. this has happened to me twice in my life with no explanation. One of my eyes was very blurry and i didn't know why and my bf pointed out that one of my pupils was extremely dilated. Dr.'s couldn't figure out why ( though I have a long history of doctors not knowing what is wrong with me ).

  2. This actually happens to me - *if* I use Visine. Apparently eye dilation is a somewhat rare side effect of Visine for some users. Several years ago, I put some in one eye (for itchy allergy symptoms) while out with my mother one day , and she looked at me about twenty minutes later and thought I was having a brain aneurysm.

I've used it a couple of times since, with the same effect - I have blue eyes very similar in color to the girl in the photo, so if I were to use it in one eye and then stand in bright light, you'd see the same effect at above.

  3. I was born with this condition. One of my pupils is slightly bigger than the other, but when I have a headache or when I have been drinking one is huge and the other is small like this picture.

    1. You might consider getting a Medical Alert band, or at least putting something to this effect in your wallet, because if you are ever brought to an E.R. unconscious, the pupillary discrepancy will cause the staff to suspect an intracranial lesion or injury and act accordingly.

    2. I was also born with this condition. It has been like that my entire life, and I am blind out of the eye with the larger pupil.

    1. Hi Kelsey -

I would be delighted to revise the post and alter the credits. I am, however, somewhat confused because I posted this photo in January of last year, but the link you sent me ("asheswillfly") says "posted 26 minutes ago" and links to "applebuddha/nakedaswecame" tumblr which ways "posted 14 hours ago.

Can you tell me when you photo was taken and when/where it was first posted on the internet?

And, btw, if that's you, you DID have anisocoria when the photo was taken. Anisocoria is an inequality of the size of the pupils, it is not a disease.

      Thank you.

  5. This happened to me once. I had knocked an open bottle of Benadryl on the floor and stepped on a tablet crushing it. I threw that one in the toilet and didn't wash my fingers before putting in my other contact. The Benadryl on the contact caused a unilateral dilation of my eye. I got to work and freaked when I looked in a mirror. I looked like the woman in the photo. I work at a hospital, I do x-ray, and one of the doctors in the ER diagnosed it after he asked if I had taken any Benadryl. I told him 'no' but explained about the dropped bottle. He said that raver kids used to put a Benadryl in contact solution and squirt it in their eyes to get big anime eyes to go to raves. Go figure. My anisocoria went away in about three hours.
