Early tricycle

Iron wheels, no suspension.  I bet it was a bumpy ride.

From The Flowers of Romance, via old photos, young kids.

  1. From an engineering point of view, there are a few bits that are far from ideal. The length of the steering tube is too short to give decent support to the forks - spacing the bearings further apart wouldn't cost appreciably more, but would make it more durable.

The spokes are - er - rudimentary?

  2. If you look carefully, you'll see that the seat actually IS sprung - it's mounted to a curved piece of metal that acts like a spring. We had one of these in our antique store for age before someone bought it to use as part of their decor, and our daughter actually used to ride it!

  4. There are no springs or shocks on a modern tricycle, either.
