"Gasland" trailer

I finally watched this movie last night.  Scary as hell.  Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2010.  Probably available as a DVD from your local library.

  1. Scary is right. How much is our water worth? I can't believe how these corporations are allowed to ransack our resources. It makes me ill.

  4. A little clarification:

I prefer clear conversation to scary implications and inference.

  5. RE the above video:

"Yes, the contamination did occur in PA and WY, but it wasn't *fracking* that did it. It occurred in the creation of fracking shafts and in the transportation of fracking chemicals to the fracking site."

    Thank you for that clarification.

  6. I won't be watching gasland. In my experience political documentaries such as this tend to rely heavily on emotional response by blurring the line between causation and correlation. I'm not taking a stance on fracking either way, but I'd much rather see serious case studies than a bunch of OMG! moments tied together with good editing.

I would, however, recommend the This American Life episode "Game Changer". It didn't force me to take a side in the debate, but it did give me a sobering look into the relationship between (big) government and industry.

  9. Ok I will start this comment by saying yes I voted for OBama. The reaaon I make this statement is that I wanted to clarify why I am so opposed to these "oilmen" that were in office for 8 yrs and the damage they have caused by their greed. How many people are aware of the fact that in the US fracking is allowed because of an exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act commonly called "HalliburtonAct"? Halliburtons former CEO Dick Cheney signed this exemption! Now they cant even tell the public or wont tell what chemicals are being used! Reports were used to push this exemption thru by deleting pertinent information. Thank you Dick for the comcern you show our nation and our people. But how can we be suprised when Halliburton also had a huge contract to supply various goods and services in Iraq. Makes you go "Hmmmm". So now no big deal if we cant drink our water! Americans just roll over and take it!
