Rear-facing safety seat - 1970!

Interesting.  I was totally unaware such things were available 40 years ago.

  1. Europe has long been way ahead of the US on automobile safety devices. I purchased a used 1962 SAAB which had factory standard seat belts. Later, I purchased a new 1963 Chevy Bel Air and had to pay extra for seat belts because they were not yet a standard accessory.
When I visited Germany in 1977 the fine for drunk driving was 1000 DM and one year loss of driving privileges, no excuses, no whining you found another way to get to work or you stayed home because driving on a revoked license resulted in even worse punishment. To this day there is no US law coming close to that. Here you can get drunk and murder someone with your car and not even get one year in prison.
The Germans were publicizing the two second interval rule back then, too. You will find very few Americans today who have ever heard of the two second rule.

  2. Am I seeing things, or is it the entire seat of the car (versus the child's car seat) that has been turned to face the rear?

  3. Looks like the entire seat pivots to face the rear.

  4. http://www.carseat.se/rearfacing/rear-facing-basics/ Yes the entire seats faces the rear. It could be turned around forward facing as well. Physically speaking rear facing is the safest way for anyone to ride in a vehicle. Rear facing is the safest way for young children to travel.
