Legally mandated holidays and vacation leave

Posted because in my pre-blogging, prime employment years, I had to go to work on most of the federally-recognized "holidays."

Found via Reddit, where there is some relevant discussion.

  1. What might be more interesting would be to resort by how well the country is doing financially...

  2. Dave makes an excellent point, though that would only raise more causal inquiries.

From a libertarian perspective, this data set is a mixed bag.

On the one hand, we believe that hard work and the opportunity to spend one's time as one sees fit is the key to growth, progress, and meritocracy.

On the other hand, we know that those who choose to work long hours are often punished twice; once by taxation, and again by the open hostility of the class warfare ideologues.

We also know that more people are working more hours because of the ever growing tax burden of the welfare state, and the destruction of the dollar by the Fed.

  3. I would be much happier and better at my job if I was allowed more than 2 weeks paid vacation. I think even having 4 day work weeks instead would make for a much more productive environment.

Of course that wouldn't really square well with the Scandinavian (and other European countries) that are doing miles better than the U.S. We're working more because employers can get away with it and wealth inequality demands it.
