Hotel peephole modified to allow reverse peeping
The wad of paper wound up on the floor because the malefactor bumped it instead of pulling it with his tweezers. Posted at Kent Brewster's Flickr photostream. Via BoingBoing.
I must be missing something. What does the paper have to do with the fact that the peephole is not complete?
Was it something nefarious? Was the paper some sort of tool to unscrew the inner lens? Was it just broken, and someone else noticed it before? So many questions. Short of knowing the "scam" (if there indeed is one) this isn't that creepy to me.
Do you suppose that a previous guest, noticing the peephole busted, put the wad of paper in the hole to prevent someone peeping in? The paper could have then dropped out when the door was shut by the latest guest.
My presumption would be that the previous tenant, or a housekeeper, or some malefactor removed the inner lens and pushed a wad of paper in there to make the absence of the lens a little less obvious.
But it's very crude. As several people at the original link note, "reverse peepholes" can be purchased (or perhaps the original peephole could just be reversed).
All in all, just a reminder to check the peephole when you check into a lodging.

Yes- low budget "fix" is a piece of paper and some tape.
