Massive security breach at the GSA

It boggles the mind to realize that gargantuan errors like this continue to happen:
WASHINGTON — Federal workers at the General Services Administration are on alert against identity theft after an employee sent the names and Social Security numbers of the agency’s entire staff to a private e-mail address.

The agency, which manages federal property, employs more than 12,000 people...

The agency explained to employees that one worker had apparently transmitted the file containing the personal data by accident while seeking “work-related assistance,” and that it had not been forwarded. Those involved had cooperated, and the computer that received the data was scrubbed clean by agency technicians.

  1. The GSA itself is an interesting organization - one of a short list of independent agencies of the US government which enjoy a greater degree of autonomy than other government agencies, as well as some immunity from Congressional oversight.

The CIA, SEC, SSA, and Federal Reserve governing board are probably more interesting independent agencies, though one might wonder why a GSA employee took it upon himself to harass a photographer. (sadly-Orwellian story at cryptome.org)
