  1. Is #6 as big as it looks or am I seeing that wrong?? If it is, how is it that it's only just been discovered??

  3. I came close to using this picture for the Neatorama post on the Papua New Guinea expedition, until I read the gallery description which said that this bat is not a new species. But it is an awesome picture!

  4. As Miss Cellania notes, the bat has been newly documented, not newly discovered.

The photo at the link is labeled "The curious nyctimene tube-nosed fruit bat. (Barcroft Pacific)" and the sidebar states "The nyctimene tube-nosed fruit bat is among two new mammals, 24 frogs, almost 100 insects and many new spider species discovered..."

A Google News search didn't lead me to a primary source. The best hard science link I can find is at LiveScience (http://www.livescience.com/animals/fruit-bat-star-wars-yoda-lookalike-101009.html), where they say "The animal had been seen before the 2009 expeditions, but scientists know little about it..." and the gallery there says "Though not new to science, this tube-nosed fruit bat remains undescribed..."

    Title fixed. Thanks, Miss C.
