Hand shadows

I tried to learn these things as a kid; I think I was able to make a bird and a rabbit.  This image from Dictionnaire encyclopédique Trousset, Paris, 1886 - 1891, via Old Book Illustrations Scrapbook Blog.

  1. I only mastered two: First, I figured out how to make a shadow that looked like a hand, and then second I learned how to make not only shadows that looked like two hands, but how to then change the shape so the shadows made the left hand look like a right hand and vice versa!

  2. I used to enjoy trying these as a kid. On a hunch I printed it and took it home and left it on the kitchen bench. My 8 year old saw it and was fascinated. We made hand shadows together from dinner until bedtime. No TV, no x-box, just play time.
