Driving time from Wisconsin to Florida

I recently entered a destination into Google Maps, and was informed that I could drive 1,450 miles in... one day!!  Plus an extra hour, probably for rest stops.  Cool.

  1. 1450 miles in 25 hours = 58 mph. Pretty reasonable.

  2. I think GMaps assumes an average speed of 60 mph on highway distances which is very close to what you got.

  3. 1450 miles is a 29 hour drive at an average speed of 50 mph. Which is a saner speed to gauge long distance drives. Over a long distance you will hit insane traffic somewhere and there will be an annoying construction stop.

If you managed to get 30mpg the whole trip you'd be burning over 48 gallons of gas. That's going to mean at least 4 stops in the average car. At 10 minutes a stop that'll add 40 minutes to the trip.
Travel time is up to 29 hours 40 minutes.

Add in a 20 minute rest stop every 4 hours of driving and the trip is going to take a little over 32 hours.

I recently did a google 11.5 hour drive in 14.5 hours thanks to all the factors above.

  4. So, being just north of Naples, that means that I can drive to Madison in about a day? Jeez. It probably took about 2 1/2-3 days worth of driving to get here from Washington State.

  6. Har, har! As a young 'un, I took a solo drive from Mesquite (just east of Dallas), Texas, to the Kentucky stateline just above Nashville, Tennessee, in one day, from 6 or so to about midnight. Whew! I had intended to stop in N'ville, but found no rooms there -- a couple of conventions were in town.

  7. I made this drive, except I stopped in Orlando and didn't go all the way to Naples. It took less than a day. I wasn't driving solo, but this isn't at all unreasonable.

  8. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. I recently followed a 1200 route from Google Maps (NC to Northern Ontario) and completed the trip within minutes of the estimated time....
