Dog bitten by a rattlesnake

The pup was bitten while on a family walk at the bottom of the Allegheny Portage Railroad Trace Trail Tuesday, and by Wednesday, his snout was severely swollen.

The family could not afford to get the animal a $700 dose of antivenom, so they treated the bite with Benadryl at the recommendation of Dr. Mark Koshko, a veterinarian at Metzger Animal Hospital of State College...
The dog apparently is recovering.  Via Reddit.

  1. I had a wolf-dog that constantly hunted the coral snakes and cottonmouths around our place. He usually bit their heads off faster than they could bite him but occasionally they would get him.

He used to swell up like that for a few days, and then it would go back down. I was only a kid, but I don't remember us ever taking him to the vet for these bites.

He lived to a ripe old age of 12.

  2. One of our horses was bitten on the nose by a rattler. Vet did a tracheotomy (sp?). Horse is OK but lost a foal.

  3. Interesting. I live about 20 minutes from the A-P Railroad. This means that I read a local news item at TYWKIWDBI.

What does that say about my local news habits? =)

  4. Bert, I remember reading an item of my local news at Kev's "Arbroath" blog. It does give one a strange feeling...
