"Slave Auction," by Jean-Leon Gerome (1880s)

This classic painting was set in ancient Rome.  Posted as a (perhaps unnecessary) reminder that human slavery is a phenomenon that has crossed all ethnic and racial boundaries throughout history.

  1. While this is true, the institutionalized form of racist slavery in the United States and Europe was a different animal entirely.

  3. To the above mentioned slave comment. If you are talking about Africans in slavery you should check out how it started, almost all Africans sales to whites was started by African "Gihanna" slave owners. Yep, Africans Sold Africans. The rest is history.
