First smörgåsbord of the new year

There are lots of Parkour videos, but this one of the Indian "monkey king" has a move at the 0:35 mark that is just stunning.

Boston.com's The Big Picture is a superb photoblog.  They have just posted "the year 2009 in photos" - a remarkable gallery of 120 images.  Wish I could repost them all, but that wouldn't be fair to them.  You can visit and browse:  Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

English Russia reports on a new Russian Vodka called "Kaballah - with Christian infants," bottles of which have a small glass child inside.  It was presumably intended as antisemitic humor, but I can't tell if it's a real product or a spoof.

Wonderful video of a man in China stopping purse thieves on a moped by throwing his bicycle at them.  Hat tip to the dude.

Women visiting Dubai can now get a facial composed of placental tissue.  Very heavy on promotion pseudoscientific bullshit.

When Minnesota senator Al Franken took a tour of the U.S. capital, he waited in line for the tour with ordinary people rather than get the VIP tour offered to congressmen.  I've had some doubts about him, but he gets a big hat tip from me for this incident.

Tips on how to make better scrambled eggs - a suggestion re technique, not ingredients.  (hint: cook slowly).

One of the world's oldest ducks has died.

A columnist at the Jerusalem Post asks Israelis a "taboo question": "If anybody treated us like we're treating the people in Gaza, what would we do?"  About 500 replies to his query so far...

A very young Jon Stewart interviewed George Carlin for ten minutes.

An extensive photoessay on Childhood Poverty in Colorado.

The Norwegians have gone to extreme measures to eliminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  It's logical and radical.  Read about how they did it.

A cartoon strip comparing the fears of Aldous Huxley with those of George Orwell.  It's too long and skinny to fit well in TYWKIWDBI, but it's worth viewing.

The new airport scanners provide such detailed images that they break child pornography laws in Britain.   The argument that the images aren't public and aren't stored can't be used because then those viewing real porn would use the same arguments in their own defense.  An interesting legal dilemma.

A story at Arbroath reports that a child was shot while sitting in church, and that the bullet was apparently fired from an AK-47 that might have been as much as three miles away.  It presumably was fired into the air during a New Year's celebration.

Egypt is becoming more strict in its blockade of Gaza.

The BBC considers its videos proprietary, so they do not offer embedding codes.  This one shows whales being attacked by seagulls.  And indirectly it's the fault of humans.
