Corporate farming

People in the United States seem to always think that U.S. farms are the biggest and best. If that's your view, consider this photo from Der Spiegel's gallery of the best photos of 2009, subtitled "The soybean harvest in Brazil." 25 harvesters in a wedge formation. The family farm with 40 acres of soybeans is almost an anachronism today.

  1. 40 acres wouldn't pay the bills on the harvesting, let alone provide an income for a family.

Farms in our area are still "family farms" But they are hundreds of acres, and they have large equipment for planting & harvesting.

Of course, in the early days of the midwest, most farmers owned 160 acres or so. That's the way the government divided the land.
