One (probably significant) difference between Afghanistan and Vietnam is that, as far as I'm aware, there are no large countries supplying arms and training to the Taliban... unless, of course, you count the U.S. -- and that isn't intentional.
That cartoon of the Vietnam Memorial makes me think that cartoonist hasn't seen the Vietnam Memorial.
